So, what is Output Leveling?
At its core, Output Leveling is a smart audio feature that manages volume inconsistencies in your content. Some companies use a simple limiter to limit loud signals. Thanks to the work of our audio engineers, AccuVoice speakers deliver more comprehensive Output Leveling, that goes beyond just "taming loud commercials”:
- If a signal is too loud, it gets reduced.
- If a signal is too quiet, it gets boosted.
- If the signal is just right, it stays untouched.
That might sound simple, but it’s incredibly effective. To get it right, we logged hours of audio levels across cable channels to determine the right "quiet" and "loud" thresholds.
Why does streaming sometimes sound different than cable?
Streaming services often deliver lower average audio levels than traditional cable channels. That’s actually good news for AccuVoice users—those quiet streams often fall below the “quiet” threshold and get boosted automatically, making dialogue easier to hear.
On the flip side, cable commercials frequently exceed the “loud” threshold and get turned down. It’s a win-win.

If your AccuVoice speaker includes surround sound modes, you can test Output Leveling in real-time. Simply turn OL on and off under the “Other Settings” menu:
- If the audio gets louder when OL is turned on, the signal was too quiet and is being boosted.
- If it gets quieter, the signal was too loud and is being reduced.
- If there's no noticeable change, the signal was already in the sweet spot.
